Detail of Gladiator Mosaic Floor 2

Title

Detail of Gladiator Mosaic Floor 2

Subject

3rd century CE mosaic floor from a villa depicting scenes from an amphitheater. Römerhalle, Bad Kreuznach, Germany

Description

Some gladiators, known as venatores, solely hunted animals for sport in the arena. On very special occasions, presenters would decorate the arena with plant life to make the scene of the hunt more realistic and thrilling for the crowd. Beasts were kept below the arena in subterranean passages and chambers. When a fight occurred, an animal was raised to the arena floor from trap doors with ramps and winches. These passageways can still be seen today in Rome's Colosseum.
