Detail of Gladiator Mosaic Floor

Title

Detail of Gladiator Mosaic Floor

Subject

3rd century CE mosaic floor from a villa depicting scenes from an amphitheater. Römerhalle, Bad Kreuznach, Germany

Description

Gladiators were often prisoners of war, criminals, salves, volunteers, and sometimes even women. Early battles were fought until the death, but later as the games grew into an enterprise, this practice ceased. Predominantly, the figures had a low status but were admired by the public for their skills and military virtues. As this mosaic shows, gladiatorial fame and admiration extended into the private realm in the form of art that depicted their battles.
