Theatre at Lepcis Magna

Title

Theatre at Lepcis Magna

Subject

Theatre at Lepcis Magna

Description

Built at Lepcis Magna, Libya during the first or second century CE, this theatre is part of a large entertainment complex also containing a circus and amphitheater. Similar to the Colosseum in Rome, many of the epigraphic inscriptions, detailing the dedications and renovations over the years, still remain. Additionally, the structure is associated with the cult temple of Ceres Augusta, mother of Emperor Tiberius. Small temples were often built near or at a theatre to reinforce the connection between the imperial cult and entertainment.
