Porta San Paolo (Porta Ostiense, Ostian Gate), Rome.

Title

Porta San Paolo (Porta Ostiense, Ostian Gate), Rome.

Subject

Walls

Description

Standing near the Porta San Paolo is the Pyramid of Cestius, built around 12 BCE. It was incorporated into the Aurelian Wall, perhaps to reduce some of the costs of building. The wall cut through a number of senatorial properties as a reprisal for certain senators' involvement in the mint workers' riot of 271, and as a reminder to to the equestrian classes of the power of the emperor.
